The Most Beautiful Hike In Ireland?

We’ve been searching, and we think we’ve found it! On 27th September 2020 we had the pleasure of taking a hike up Coumshingaun in Co Waterford, and it was probably the best hike we’ve ever done!

Coumshingaun Loop Walk is a moderate 4-hour (7.5 km) walking route around a natural amphitheater of splendour and silence, the Coumshingaun Corrie Lake, and the surrounding mountains in County Waterford, Ireland. Coumshingaun is one of the finest examples of a corrie or coum in Europe and the Comeragh mountains’ most famous landmark. Corries were formed by glacial movement during the ice age.

Where to start

If you’re travelling with us, you won’t have to worry about that – your driver will bring you to the best place to start, which is the car park at Kilclooney Wood, on the R676. This car park is small and often full by 9.30 am most mornings, so we recommend an early start if you’re going to attempt this trail. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, rain gear, water, and of course, a phone to snap some of the most amazing photos you will ever take on a hike!

On leaving the woods, just swing left and follow the well-trodden path. It’s recommended that you take this hike ‘clockwise’ around the lake, as there are some steep parts which are easier on this approach. You will have to scramble a bit on the ascent, which is challenging enough, but do-able! It took us about 2.5 hours to reach the top, with lots of little breaks along the way to capture the views and snap some pics.

The View from the Top

The top of the trail is about 750 meters high, and on a clear day, you can see for miles! The beautiful Comeragh mountains shoulder you, and the plains of Tipperary and Waterford roll out before your eyes. It’s a beautiful boggy plateau on the top, so be prepared, your shoes may get a little wet! But it’s worth it, we promise!

The trail levels off at the top to a lovely leisurely stroll around the ridge of the lake, which looks so dark and mysterious below. On reaching the top, you really get a sense of how high you’ve climbed – the people following you appear like tiny ants on the trail! (see final pic)

All downhill from here

This is where the trail gets really special… as you descend, it seems like the view changes at every turn, and there is another beautiful vista to behold. The descent is easy going, with one steep section at the end that leaves the legs quaking like jelly!

There are lots of nice spots to sit down and enjoy a hot coffee and a cereal bar or two! And marvel at the good weather, the beautiful mountains, and the great company! Then it’s time to return home for a hot soak and a celebratory meal.
